Pubic WHAT?!
So I know it’s been a really long time, and I’m sorry. I also have a doozy of an excuse…it seems I have developed symphysis pubis dysfunction. That’s where the cartilaginous joint in the front of your pelvis starts to pull apart (for you visual types, I have included a diagram below). And yeah, it’s as much fun as it sounds. It’s also exascerbated and made more painful as a result of lots of daily activities, including standing on one leg to put on pants, rolling over, and walking.

Apparently the objective at this point is to prevent the joint from separating entirely, either before or during birth, which would leave me on crutches. If separation can be avoided, most people are ok a few days postpartum. To that end, I have been prescribed twice-weekly physical therapy. While I’ve been to PT for running injuries before, this has been a bit different. I don’t really have exercises to do in between visits, and the visits are largely taken up with adjustments. My sole responsibility between visits is to press my pubic bone together with my hand for 5 minutes, twice a day (I do this at home so no one at my office thinks I’ve taken to masturbating on the job).
The truth is that I’ve avoided being on here much lately because as an IFer, I know how much I liked (and still love!) to read people’s random, trivial complaints about pregnancy. I’ve always been of the (perhaps bitter) school that AT LEAST YOU GET TO HAVE A BABY, SO SHUT UP. And so I have tried to take my own advice. The problem is that when you’re in chronic pain, it’s hard not to mention it. So…I hope you all can forgive me for writing about this, and I promise this will be the last full post on the topic.
